High anxiety: Collapse - Riverside Studios

It’s a brave or maybe slightly provocative production to use Hammersmith Bridge on their artwork for a show called Collapse, which is about how everything collapses—poorly maintained bridges, relationships, and jobs. Nothing works. That’s probably too close to home for Hammersmith residents stuck with a magnificently listed and useless bridge on their front door. It gets even weirder when you realise the piece is staged in what looks like a meeting room with a bar. However, keeping things together in the most unlikely of circumstances is at the heart of Allison Moore's witty and engaging four-hander, which is currently having a limited engagement at Riverside Studios . The piece opens with Hannah (Emma Haines) about to get an injection from her husband (Keenan Heinzelmann). They’re struggling for a baby, and he’s struggling to get out of bed. But he managed to give her a shot of hormones before she started worrying about the rest of the day. She’s unsure she will keep her job with ...

Heads up: previewing La Soireé @lasoireelive


Returning for a sixth season in London, the little show with a big heart La Soirée is back at the Spiegeltent at the Southbank Centre.

The show is currently in previews and I recently caught up with some of the performers during a lunchtime break.

Mario Queen of the Circus is the alter ego and creation of Clarke McFarlane. He has toured the world with this character and been part of the show since its inception.

You have just started previewing and how has it been going?

Mario: Everyone has been working really hard to get the show ready. It has been pretty intense but now it is just a matter of shaping the show.

Part of the fun of this show is seeing new acts with some old favourites. What can we expect to see this time around?

Mario: What is different this time for me is I get to do a new act and I have not been in the Southbank seasons. The spiritual home of the show is in the Spiegeltent so it is great to be here for that.



Melanie Chy has been touring the world since she was six. She roars on the stage with a jaw-dropping and sexy routine. Part martial arts, gymnast and modern dance, it’s her first time with La Soiree and first time in the UK.

You make a terrific entrance and look like you are having so much fun (note this might be slight spoiler for people who have not seen the act yet):

Melanie: It’s all about having a good time while you are performing. I think it is the first time to have a 300kilo motorcycle driven down a one metre aisle.

Was that a challenge?

Melanie: The show is so fast paced and has such a high energy we had to figure out how to do it fast.

How is it like working with the rest of the cast?

Melanie: The show has a huge reputation in our industry and everyone knows it all over the world.

A lot of the cast have been performing together for years and so there is a real family like atmosphere. I feel like I am like the new child!

What is it like performing in the Spiegeltent?

Melanie: From our side, it is really great to have the audience that close and see the expressions on their face. You can really play with the audience. I think that is one of the reasons why the show is so successful as the audience likes to have that connection with the performer and to be able to see every little detail.

Yammel Rodriguez, known for her love of the finest Cuban cigars, has been drafted in to whip audiences into shape. Her innovative performance on a single strap soon be dominating the stages of the world.

What was the inspiration behind your character?

Yammel: The song speaks about this woman who is really hard to get. I started with the premise that she is a strong character. The smoking of the cigar is a beautiful image to play in the air. Since I work with a one arm technique, it gives me one arm free so why not?

This is your first time with La Soireé, how does that feel?

Yammel: I’m extremely excited about it. I came to see the show three times last year and I wanted to be in this show so badly. I have been training for many years but I am quite new as a professional so I am really happy to be given this opportunity.

What is the audience reaction here like?

Yammel: I love it. When people are far away it feels so cold. I love to give an action and receive a reaction. It just makes you feel like you are alive as an artist rather than just doing a performance.

Opera and full frontal nudity: Rigoletto

David McVicar's oddly modern production of Rigoletto is back at the Royal Opera House . This modern and minimalist dark production has evolved over the years. It is better lit now but there is still an orgy and full frontal nudity within the first thirty minutes. This enables anyone not in the stalls an excellent view of a flaccid penis and a nicely shaved bush. But as time goes it seems more and more superfluous to the main focus of this tragedy of a court jester who seeks revenge. Here is hoping that the production continues to evolve... Conductor John Eliot Gardiner keeps the music well paced. Dimitri Platanias in the title role sounded great and received a rapturous applause for his interpretation of the role. You get a sense more of the doting father rather than the court jester or cursed man here. Vittorio Grigolo plays the Duke and sounds too lovely to be the cad the role calls for, but it is hard not to like when he is on stage anyway. And it is easier to understan...

Fantasies: Afterglow @Swkplay

Nowadays no self-respecting gay play can be staged without full frontal nudity of some kind. It feels like the default response for the modern gay play now that gay rights are no longer an issue .   Afterglow, currently playing at Southwark Playhouse , serves it up in spades. From the beginning, three men are in a bed, naked. There’s what appears to be a very brief exhalation of ecstasy, before the obligatory rush to the shower. But the gratuitous nudity and excellent performances can’t conceal this is a pretty conventional and predictable story about a fantasy couple.  The three men in the simultaneous orgasm at the start of the piece are Josh, Alex and Darius. Josh and Alex seem to live in a New York world where they can afford a rooftop apartment in Manhattan while holding jobs as a theatre director and a grad student in chemistry. As writer S. Asher Gelman based it on his own experiences, perhaps gay plays with full frontal nudity are the way to achieve financial ...

Play ball: Damn Yankees @LandorTheatre

Damn Yankees at the Landor Theatre is one hell of a fun, sexy show. A great cast of dancers and singers give this show about a man who sells his soul to get on his beloved baseball team (and give them a chance of winning) new legs and balls. It also helps to up the ante with the sexiness with some healthy doses of cleavage and legs (and that's just the men). The musical is a retelling of the Faust story set in the 1950s when the New York Yankees dominated the game.
